Hot Water extraction or "Steam Cleaning" method of carpet cleaning can usually take about 4 to 6 hours to completely dry. It also depends on the type and thickness of the carpet. Very Low Moisture carpet cleaning or "VLM"
can typically dry in an hour or less. Dry times can be reduced by speed drying with fans or blowers. 
You should consider having your carpet professionally cleaned every 10 to 12 months.
